We met with Melanie and her adorable daughter Willa at their local Red Hook playground to talk about moving to NY, living in Brooklyn, and their average day.

Melanie Adams

Current Location

I live in Brooklyn, work in Manhattan

Where were you born?

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

A few words that best describe you:

Adventurous and independent

Favorite color?

What’s your idea of the perfect New York day?

Spring in New York is amazing, when everything is in full bloom and everyone is sporting their spring attire. I think a perfect NY day for me would be a spring day exploring Central Park or the botanical gardens. Maybe picnic in the park just taking in all the scents and colors, vibing everyone’s spring energy.

What’s the best piece of advice someone ever gave you?

Never pass up an opportunity that you will regret.

Favorite pastime?

Seeing my favorite band PHISH... it’s a time when I can escape everything and just listen and dance to the music. Shake it all off and have fun!

Favorite book?

It’s really hard to name a favorite but I do love biographies. You will catch me reading mostly biographies, I love to learn about people in their time and place. Most lately I’m reading about disciplining your toddler:)

What do you most love about living in Brooklyn?

Brooklyn has a real neighborhood feel. We know mostly everyone that lives on our block and all of our kids play together.

What qualities do you most admire in others?

Patience and perseverance

What are your pet peeves?

My biggest pet peeve is when people do not listen!

Where can you be found on a Sunday afternoon?

Now that I have a toddler running around you will find me at the playground.

Describe your morning commute

I bike to downtown Brooklyn if it’s not raining or snowing, it takes me about 10 minutes then I catch the 4/5 subway to Union Square. I have a 5 minute walk to work from Union Square stop. From door to door it takes me 30 minutes if I hustle..... I try to keep the commute quick so I can get to work and back quick now that I have a baby!

Who are your role-models?

My grandfather was a wonderful role model for me. He was patient, hardworking, loving and kind to all beings. He would stop to help anyone that was in need & never expect a thing in return. A peaceful soul!

Three wishes for your daughter?

I wish that she finds a true passion in life, true love, and is able to travel to see and experience the world.

Winter or summer?

Summer, I love the beach, ocean and the sun shining everyday! Also, I think people are a bit more laid back in the summer which I like.

What does style mean to you?

My life requires me to be adaptable so comfort is very important to me. When I was a young girl I never wanted to be in dresses, only jeans, and it’s still pretty much the same. Although I do love to get dressed up every so often. I appreciate fashion and living in NYC lets you experience it. It’s a free fashion show everyday. So I guess my style is casual but I like to look neat and a bit stylish so I can show a bit of who I am.

Do you collect anything?

Seashells. I started my collection when I worked on a yacht, I was able to collect many from all parts of the world.

Three things on your life-long to-do list:

I want to skydive, if I could take a trip to the moon I would do that as well, and maybe travel to India.

What’s inside your handbag right now?

Crayons to keep my daughter occupied, Be Well hand wipes (can’t live with out them!), MZW wallet that I love (an oldie a but favorite), my favorite color of nail polish, chap stick, hand cream, subway card, Vitamin C packet (to keep me healthy), my favorite umbrella... all of my membership cards to zoo, botanic gardens, museums etc. Vitamins that I always forget to take...
